Q: What is an expired domain?
A: An expired domain name is a domain name the original owner has not renewed within the renewal grace period. It is therefore available to be registered by someone else. However, the exact amount of time from the date of expiry to the date available to be registered again varies from registrar to registrar.

Each domain name goes through a life cycle. It is the length of the life cycle that determines when you can register expired domains.

The domain life cycle consists of 4 main stages:

Stage 1: The domain is registered for a period of 1-10 years. It does not become an expired domain until it isn't renewed by the current owner.

Stage 2: Each registrar has an auto renew grace period that varies between 1 – 45 days. The domain is expired but the registrar is allowing the original owner to renew it before requesting it to be deleted.

Stage 3: If the original owner has not renewed at stage 1 or stage 2 the registrar will send the domain name to the Shared Registry System (SRS). The SRS may hold the domain in stage 3 for up to 30 days. It isn't available to register by the general public and if the original domain owner renews the domain they usually incur an administration charge.

Stage 4: After 30 days, the SRS will set the domain for deletion. This stage varies between 1-5 days. When the domain is deleted it is available for anyone to register.
